MOVIES -- On the train with Jason and Wes
By RYAN PEARSON -- The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (November 2, 2007 04:44 AM EDT) Don't get Jason Schwartzman started on his mustache.
The actor grew it out for the film "The Darjeeling Limited," which he stars in and co-wrote with his cousin Roman Coppola and director Wes Anderson.
"I do all my own growing," Schwartzman says, seeming as if he could riff engagingly on facial hair for hours. He is onboard a private train car headed from Los Angeles' Union Station to Paso Robles, Calif., promoting the movie, which is set on a train in India, by riding the rails once again. Anderson approached Schwartzman and Coppola with the first scene of the movie written - one in which an anonymous businessman type played by Bill Murray just misses his train as Adrien Brody speeds past to catch it. The trio crafted a plot of self-discovery and exploration of love (and hate) between three brothers, played by Brody, Schwartzman and frequent Anderson collaborator Owen Wilson. They wrote about half the script in the U.S., then traveled around India for three weeks to gather inspiration for the remainder. They spent 39 days shooting in India and another two days in New York filming flashbacks. Long after production wrapped, Wilson was hospitalized for a reported suicide attempt. It cast a bit of a cloud over the movie, in which his heavily bandaged character mutters that he "purposely" crashed a motorcycle. The film opens in wide release Friday. For more on Schwartzman's mustache, the creative process and the cast's reaction to Wilson showing up for the premiere, watch this asap video report.
